Stomach cancer, or gastric cancer, involves uncontrolled growth of cancer cells in the stomach. It often begins in the stomach lining and can spread to nearby organs if untreated.

Who is at risk?

  • People aged 65 or older.
  • Those assigned male at birth.
  • Individuals of East Asian, South/Central American, or Eastern European descent.

How common is it?

Stomach cancer is among the most common cancers globally but is rare in the U.S., making up only about 1.5% of annual cancer diagnoses.

Symptoms:

Stomach cancer often shows no early signs. Advanced symptoms include:

  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Stomach pain or bloating (above the belly button).
  • Fatigue, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Trouble swallowing.
  • Black stools or vomiting blood.
  • Feeling full after small meals.
