drimg

A pilonidal cyst is a fluid- or air-filled sac that forms in the crease of the buttocks, often caused by a skin infection and ingrown hairs. It can be acute (one-time) or chronic (recurrent). If untreated, it may lead to abscesses or sinus cavities.

Symptoms:

  • Pain, especially when sitting.
  • A red, tender dimple or swollen area between the buttocks.
  • Drainage of foul-smelling pus or blood.
  • Nausea, fever, or fatigue in severe cases.

Who is at risk?

  • Men (3–4 times more likely than women).
  • Ages 20–35.
  • People who sit frequently, have overweight/obesity, or thick body hair.
  • Tight clothing wearers.

Causes:

While not fully understood, pilonidal cysts are often linked to ingrown hairs that cause infections.
