What Is Rectal Prolapse?

Rectal prolapse occurs when the rectum, the final part of the large intestine, slips down into the anal canal and sometimes protrudes out of the anus. This happens when the muscles supporting the rectum weaken or deteriorate due to factors like aging, childbirth, or chronic constipation.

Who Is Affected?

  • Most common in individuals assigned female at birth, especially over age 50.
  • Can occur in children due to chronic diarrhea or cystic fibrosis.
  • Affects about 2.5 in every 1,000 people.

Is It Serious?

While not an urgent condition, rectal prolapse can cause discomfort and lead to complications like fecal incontinence.
