Perianal Abscess

A perianal abscess is a painful, pus-filled lump near the anus or perineal area caused by a clogged and infected anal gland.

Who is at risk?

  • Most common in men or people AMAB, ages 20–60.
  • Higher risk with conditions like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diabetes, or STIs.
  • Other factors: smoking, pregnancy, frequent diarrhea/constipation, immune-suppressing drugs, or rectal object insertion.

Symptoms:

  • Swollen, red, and tender lump near the anus.
  • Throbbing pain, worsened by sitting, coughing, or bowel movements.
  • Pus discharge, rectal bleeding, or irritation around the anus.
  • Painful bowel movements or abdominal discomfort.
