What is Testicular Torsion?

Testicular torsion is a severe condition where the spermatic cord twists, cutting off blood flow to the testicle. Without immediate treatment, the testicle may die.

How Serious Is It?

Testicular torsion is a medical emergency requiring urgent care. The sooner treatment is received, the higher the chance of saving the testicle:

  • Within 4-6 hours: Nearly all cases save the testicle.
  • After 12 hours: 50% chance of saving the testicle.
  • After 24 hours: Only 10% save the testicle.

Symptoms

  • Sudden, intense testicular pain
  • Swelling on one side of the scrotum
  • Discoloration of the scrotum
  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain

Causes and Risk Factors

Testicular torsion often occurs due to a “bell clapper” deformity, where testicles swing freely, leading to twisting. It can also follow an injury but is unrelated to physical activity. It most commonly affects males aged 12-18.

Complications

  • Testicle removal due to tissue death
  • Reduced sperm count or infertility
