Laparoscopic Ovarian Surgery

An ovarian cystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove ovarian cysts—fluid-filled sacs on the ovary. These cysts often resolve on their own, but surgery may be needed if they persist, grow, or cause pain.

Types of Ovarian Cystectomy

  • Laparoscopic: Minimally invasive, using small incisions and a camera for cyst removal.
  • Open Surgery (Laparotomy): Larger incision for removing large or potentially cancerous cysts.

Laparoscopic surgery is preferred for easier recovery unless cancer or cyst size necessitates open surgery.

Causes of Ovarian Cysts

  • Hormonal disorders (e.g., PCOS)
  • Ovulation or ovulation-inducing drugs
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Cancer

Reasons for Surgery

Surgery may be required if the cyst:

  • Is large (over 2.5–3 inches)
  • Causes pain
  • Might be cancerous
